This 404 error page is designed in an elegant and creative way suitable for all type of website. This eye catching grayish and red highlighting page is free, responsive and can be a unique way to showcase a website error. Entierly designed with HTML5 & CSS3. This 404 error page template is 100% responsive and cross-browser compatible.

Version 2.0 adds four pages in the same design — a contact page with a validating form that Contact Us opens (contact.html), a server-error page (500.html), a scheduled-maintenance page with a live countdown and a notify-me email form (maintenance.html) and a no-internet page whose Try Again button reloads (offline.html) — plus three ready-to-send HTML emails: the contact auto-reply (email-contact.html), the notify-me confirmation (email-notify.html) and a maintenance notice (email-maintenance-notice.html). Back Home now really goes home, the layout can no longer overlap on any screen size, and the fonts are self-hosted.

What’s new

  1. v2.0Sep 2026
    • contact.html — where Contact Us now goes: name, email and message with validation (the problems are listed in one box) and a confirmation. Add data-endpoint to POST it to your own server; without it the form is a demo ("Demo only" lines — delete them when you go live). Details at the top of js/main.js.
    • 500.html — "FiveFive", the server-error twin of the 404, with Try Again (reloads) and Back Home. Marked noindex.
    • maintenance.html — "Back Soon": a countdown in four boxes (days / hours / minutes / seconds) to the date you put in data-deadline (empty = seven days from the visitor's first visit) and a notify-me email form that validates and shows a thank-you. Marked noindex.
    • offline.html — "Offline": Try Again reloads the page, and a line appears when the connection returns. Marked noindex.
    • email-contact.html — the automatic reply the contact form sends.
    • email-notify.html — the "you're on the list" confirmation the notify-me form sends.
    • email-maintenance-notice.html — the heads-up you send before maintenance: start time, back-by time, expected downtime, a status-page button. All three emails are table-based and inline-styled for Gmail, Outlook and Apple Mail, use no images, and carry {{placeholders}} for your mailer.
    • v1 positioned every single piece of the page — the heading, the circle, the text, the buttons, even the credit line — as an absolute percentage of the screen HEIGHT, hand-tuned at six separate breakpoints. Any screen height those six did not anticipate overlapped pieces or pushed them off the visible area. It is a normal, stable stacked layout now, in the same order and at the same sizes, vertically centred as one group.
    • Back Home and Contact Us both went to "#": Back Home now goes to "/" and Contact Us to the contact page.
    • The page fetched Roboto from Google in five weights, but no rule in the stylesheet names Roboto at all — a pure wasted request, dropped outright. Antonio (the one weight v1 actually uses) and Lato both ship inside the page as woff2 instead of eight files.
    • "does't exist" corrected to "doesn't exist". Meta description added; a dead fontsquirrel selector and the unused container/row wrappers are gone.
    • Plain HTML and CSS plus one dependency-free js/main.js — no framework, no jQuery, nothing fetched from Google.
    • Recolour in one place: --red and --dark at the top of css/style.css.
